About 9 miles (14 km) long and 9,094 feet (2,772 metres) high, it is the source of many rivers of Guyana, and of the Amazon and Orinoco.

No list is complete without the baffling mystery of the Bermuda Triangle in the Atlantic Ocean. This three-cornered area lying between Bermuda, Miami and San Juan is highly infamous for numerous cases of disappearances of people, water vessels and aircrafts that try to cross this point. Why? No one knows for sure, but many theories have evolved over the years. While some say it could be the weather playing tricks, other give more bizarre explanations of aliens and monsters abducting people.

The ever-shifting sands of the Sahara desert cover a large section of Mauritania. They all but obscure the remarkable Guelb Richat or Richat structure, although its heart remains clear like a bulls-eye in the middle of this Envisat image.
The 50-km-diameter circular Richat structure is one of those geological features that are more clearly observed from space than from down on the ground, with this 'eye of Africa' a familiar landmark to astronauts since the earliest manned missions.

In Colombia, Rio Cano Castales, or the ‘river of five colors’, is a special place where for a brief period of time every year when the conditions are just right, the river explodes with vibrant colours your eyes won’t believe. During the short span between the wet and dry season, when the water level is just right, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Macarenia clavigera turns a brilliant red. It is offset by splotches of yellow and green sand, blue water, and countless shades in between.

For years, scientists thought that the eternal flame in New York was kept alight by gas produced by ancient, extremely hot rocks.
However, researchers from Indiana University have discovered that the rocks underneath the Chestnut Ridge County Park aren't hot enough to produce this gas, which means another process is producing the gas that's keeping the flame burning. 
And they have not been able to identify exactly what the process is.

There are hundreds of 'natural' eternal flames around the world, and each one is thought to be kept alight by natural gas produced from the rocks beneath it.
